Overview of Ekurhuleni West TVET College

Ekurhuleni West TVET College (EWC) is a public institution regulated by the FET Colleges Act no 16 of 2006. It was established in terms of the Further Education and Training Act, Act No. 98 of 1998, declared as such by the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education (Gauteng Province) in terms of a Provincial Gazette Extraordinary (dated 7 December 2001).

Ekurhuleni West College is situated in Gauteng Province in South Africa. EWC operates within a broad band and diverse communities and comprises of the following six (6) campuses: Alberton, Boksburg, Germiston, Kathorus, (in Katlehong/ Vosloorus/ Thokoza), Kempton (in Kempton Park) and Tembisa.

The name "Ekurhuleni" is originated from the geographical and municipal areas [the Southern Service Delivery Regions] (SDR) namely: Germiston (as regional centre), Alberton, areas of Boksburg, Katlehong, Thokoza, Vosloorus and sections of Freeway Park and the [Northern Service Delivery Region] (NDR) namely Kempton Park (as regional centre) Tembisa, Edenvale, including Bedfordview and Primrose, in which the College is situated.

"Ekurhuleni" - means place of peace in Xitsonga. "Ekurhuleni" was taken from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and "West" from the Western Belt within the Municipal area, where all the campuses are situated.

The six campuses are ideally situated in an area that is currently experiencing economic growth and high employment resulting from the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

It should be noted that about 40% of all industrial activity in Gauteng derives from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipal area, which is the largest industrial area in the country and this area is identified as the core focus area for future economic development in the Gauteng Province. Manufacturing, together with Wholesale and Retail Trade, collectively contribute to 50% of the Gross Geographic Product (GGP) of Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality (EMM). This has resulted in the Manufacturing and Industrial sector of EMM contributing to 23% of the GGP of Gauteng Province. Towns within Ekurhuleni are linked by highways as well as National and Provincial roadways of high standards which makes transport and freight very easy.

Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality (EMM) districts are located on the higher lying central band that runs across Gauteng Province.

Land Use Patterns

  • There is a central, east-west oriented mining and industrial achieving belt.
  • A belt of residential development surrounding the industrial belt.
  • Rural/agricultural areas to the North - East and in the central portion of EMM.

Most of the CBDs around Ekurhuleni experience problems of urban decay but there are still big Malls that the college derives key strength from, such as:

Academic Approach

The result-oriented approach of EWC ensures academic integrity and the ability to reach competitive results. The NC (V) pass rate for 2010 is 65,92%.

Upgrading of and Extension of Facilities

The following building projects were completed during 2010:

  • Automotive workshop at Germiston Campus
  • Tourism Simulated Enterprise at Kempton
  • IT workshop at Boksburg

Workshops are fully equipped and utilised by students and lecturers to acquire skills and practically apply the theoretical components of the NC (V) Engineering Study programmes.

Class rooms were converted into simulated enterprise offices for Business studies programmes. There are now 18 simulated enterprise offices across the campuses of EWC. Each simulated enterprise office is fully equipped to simulate an office in a working environment and is divided into:

  • A boardroom (where meeting procedures are practically practiced)
  • A reception area (where reception skills are acquired)
  • Subdivisions where financial, procurement and marketing skills are acquired

The College has a top class Business and Administrative System known as ITS (Integrated Tertiary Software) which ensures a fully integrated administrative system, including:

The programmes also comprise of conceptual and applied knowledge. Each programme has a theoretical as well as practical component where students are exposed to practical experience in either a workshop or simulated enterprises office environment or obtaining relevant experience in the work environment.

One of the strategic objectives of the College is to create partnerships with Commerce and Industry in order to offer students a real working environment practical experience.
