On 03 October 2023, The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande, launched the
ground-breaking Hairdressing Occupational Programme at the Ekurhuleni West TVET College's Germiston Campus.
When addressing the audience, Dr Nzimande said that this government and our Higher Education and Training
sector, had taken a conscious decision to formalise skills training in the hairdressing sector by means of
Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges to offer a Hairdressing Occupational Certificate
as a fully funded programme.
"The decision to formalise a hairdressing programme came about after the realisation that there are a lot of
hairdressers who offer a variety of hair and beauty services. However, the majority of our South African black
youth play a very small role in this industry. This is because of their lack of formal training to offer such a
service," said Dr Nzimande.
The hairdressing programme will see students doing their theory and practical at the colleges in fully accredited
salons. The colleges will be accredited to offer the full three-year occupational certificate and the six QCTO
hairdressing skills qualifications. All students accepted for the hairdressing programme by TVET colleges will
receive full tuition fees payment, including their hairdressing equipment.
On completion of their studies, students will be provided with all the basic equipment they will require to
start their own businesses.
As the event was about to be concluded, EWC took advantage of Minister Nzimande's presence to get the College
Salon officially opened by the him. The ribbon cutting and unveiling ceremony was held at a secondary event that
took place at the salon. The Minister also had the opportunity to have his hair cut at the salon! The new name of
the Salon is 'REGAL BLADE HAIRDRESSING SALON.'
